We are the new kids on the block of a big manufacturing industry. We have learnt a lot and we know we have a lot more to learn.
Back in the day, New Zealand used to be one of the best manufacturing countries in the world, until the 1990s saw companies move the services offshore in a bid to reduce costs.
We have met lots of artisans and crafters who talk of the days of New Zealand's humming industry and how the trade has since died. They mention the beautiful old industrial machinery, which sits gathering dust in garages up and down the country. Of the people who can't bear to part with this machinery because it still has life in it, still has the ability to do what it was made to do.
We hope that Unde can contribute to bringing a small part of this industry back. That we can train up others in these trades and keep things local - not only because it's good for our community, locally and nationally, but because it is better for the planet - reducing our carbon footprint by manufacturing everything right here in our backyard.
